Stage I

The eyes begin to close and you can be easily awakened.  If aroused from this stage of sleep, you may feel as if you haven't slept.  This stage may last for five to ten minutes.  During this time, you may feel like you are falling, which may cause you to jump suddenly, this is called hypnic myoclonia.

At night you sleep in stages, there are four stages of sleep. To feel fully rested, ideally you need to wake up at the end of the sleep cycle.

REM Sleep

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep  is the deepest stage of sleep.  This is when dreaming occurs, we typically spend more than 2 hours each night dreaming. People taught a skill and then deprived of non-REM sleep could recall what they had learned after sleeping, while people deprived of REM sleep could not.

Stage II

Light period of sleep, preparing to enter the next stages to sleep, slow heart rate and body temperature decreases.
